Job Description

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate’s responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

Provide laboratory technical support:

  • Conduct and/or schedule maintenance and repair of laboratory equipment;
  • Prepare and maintain inventories of laboratory research reagents;
  • Stock-check and order laboratory reagents and consumables;
  • Conduct routine mycoplasma testing of laboratory cell lines and other routine quality assessment of laboratory reagents, as appropriate (such as cell line verification);

Oversee laboratory safety:

  • Prepare and maintain laboratory SOPs, safety documentation and user registers for all lab protocols/procedures;
  • Provide safety and SOP training to new lab members;
  • Organise additional external safety training where required (e.g. radiation usage training);
  • Take responsibility for maintenance/stocking of laboratory safety equipment (lab coats, first aid kit, eye wash stations etc);

Research and experimentation:

  • Follow established protocols and conduct detailed literature reviews to provide ad hoc research project assistance for the staff and students of the Centre for Neuroendocrinology (including collecting, compiling, processing, analysis and presentation of research data);
  • Conduct independent research activities in line with the research interests of the Centre;
  • Instigate and optimise new assays/methodologies required in the laboratory;
  • Assist in ethics applications for the Centre;

Qualification & Experience

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • BSc (Hons) in a Biological Sciences/ Medical Sciences discipline
  • One years’ experience in a laboratory management or researcher role in a cell biology/molecular biology laboratory

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES): 

  • Ability to write SOPs
  • Knowledge of BSLII regulations
  • General laboratory Health and Safety skills and knowledge

  • Information security management and governance:
